Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of everyday business life over the past few years. Yet for many businesses the question remains the same: “Where should we begin?” The good news is that getting value from AI requires neither a huge budget nor your own data-science team. Choosing the right problem is half the job.
Start with the problem, not the technology
The most common mistake is to set out saying “let’s use AI.” But AI is not a goal — it is a tool. Instead, list the repetitive, time-consuming and rule-based tasks in your business. These are usually the areas where AI delivers the fastest return.
- Are most customer questions similar? A chat assistant can handle the first responses.
- Do you enter invoices, forms or documents by hand? Document reading (OCR + classification) can automate it.
- Do you forecast stock, demand or sales? Prediction models trained on your history can help.
Pick a small, measurable pilot
Your first project should not overhaul all your processes. On the contrary, choose a narrowly scoped pilot whose outcome is easy to measure. A clear goal such as “reduce customer-service response time” makes it easier to evaluate success. If the pilot works, you can scale it; if it fails, you learn at a small cost.
Is your data ready?
AI is only as good as the data that feeds it. Before you start, review what data you have and where and in what form it is kept. Scattered but existing data is often better than starting from scratch. There is no harm in postponing a large data infrastructure until it is truly needed.
Ready-made services or a custom solution?
Today you can access many AI capabilities through ready cloud services; this is the most practical way to start quickly. Moving to a custom solution comes onto the agenda as your business differentiates or data privacy becomes important. The right approach is usually to start with ready services and customize as the need becomes clear.
